‘Stand up to challenges and perform with excellence’

- Ng Tsz Yau

The Student of the Year – Linguist

Organised by the South China Morning Post, with the support of sole sponsor The Hong Kong Jockey Club and sterling assistance from the Education Bureau, the Student of the Year Awards 2018 has taken place in search for Hong Kong’s most outstanding secondary school students and honour excellence in different categories. After submitting some of her original work from the last academic year, Ng Tsz Yau of S5A was selected as a finalist and invited to attend an interview with a panel of judges. Finally, she was honourably awarded the Second Runner-up in “The Student of the Year – Linguist (Cantonese)” category.

Tsz Yau’s Chinese teacher comments, ‘Tsz Yau is a student who dares to stand up to challenges. She has a strong passion for Chinese and she is keen on writing in particular. Her ideas are explored and inspired by reading different materials and taking part in various extra-curricular activities. She has also put pen to paper with reference to her real life experiences. Receiving this award certainly proves that her hard work pays off.’

During the interview, Tsz Yau shared how she faced up to diversities and what she learnt in the process. Despite the fact that she encountered learning difficulties since she was a child, encouraged by her teachers, she put a lot of effort into her studies and was able to overcome quite a few challenges. Initially, facing competitors from high banding schools made her considerably nervous. She then realized the process of learning is far more important than the outcome. Thus, whether winning or losing, she exercised her ability of coping with diversities and performed her best in the interview.

With courage, confidence and perseverance, Tsz Yau is always ready to step out of her comfort zone and challenge herself in the future ahead.
