Promoting an Inclusive Society and Demonstrating the Spirit of Care with Technology: Ho Yu Mechanical Engineering Team Achieves Great Results in FIRST®️ LEGO®️ League Explore |
A Mechanical Engineering Team formed by six Primary 3 students from Ho Yu (Yip Hiu Tung, Zhong Ming Hung, Cheung Matthew, Lam Cheuk Wang, Lok Chun Him Cedric and Ngan Hei Kiu) participated in FIRST®️ LEGO®️ League Explore in July 2021 and won the Team Model Award! The purpose of the competition is to allow students to create unique solutions through the building blocks of LEGO®️ Education and to present their outcome by making models, posters and short videos. Students need to learn and apply STEAM knowledge in the process and work in teams to test and improve their plans. This helps students build comprehensive skills, such as critical thinking, innovative thinking, problem-solving skills, communication skills, leadership, and self-confidence. Our school team has named the model as “Harmonious Water World” under the theme of barrier-free water park. The two-story model has multiple areas of water amusement facilities, including water table tennis area, revolving fitness area, surfing area, open-air dining area, multifunctional swimming pool, trial running area and track area. In the hope of allowing people with disabilities to enjoy the facilities of the water park, the students have specially added a number of barrier-free passages to facilitate the passage of mobility impaired persons. The model contains a number of innovative elements, such as a lifting platform for people with disabilities to adjust the height, some mechanical elements with cogwheels, and brain teasers with a range of levels on the track to increase excitement. In addition, the model also includes programming design which gives warning and stops the descent of the lift when someone approaches to avoid accidents. From drawing design sketches to assembling models, the team members were all creative and actively sharing their opinions to create such a unique model of water park! |
